From the layout to the finishes, this year is a turning point for kitchen design. Kitchens have changed a lot over the decades and planning a kitchen remodel is very important to one’s lifestyle. But since our 2020 year, people began to focus more on the home than ever! This focus has grown into many changes and created a collection of kitchen design trends we cannot take our eyes off. We want to do all the trends in our kitchen but since that would take away from the allure of each, we managed to break it down. Technological advances and changing social dynamics have contributed greatly to the rise of modern kitchen designs. There’s also a much bigger focus on open-concept homes that revolve around the kitchen so everyone can be together. We’ve gathered the top 10 and put them on our list for your inspiration.

1) Modern Open Concept

Open Concept

We have a thing for ultra-modern, open kitchens that seamlessly blend with the rest of the central living area. It is becoming essential that a kitchen in an open concept room seamlessly ties into the rest of the space. A single wall of appliances and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is perfect for an open floor plan kitchen. A long island to keep the work triangle compact and it holds additional storage. Island seating allows friends and family to stay close without getting in the way. A large entry-way to connect the open layout with a dining area. The openness without walls to separate the two spaces this way, natural light from the dining area spills into the kitchen, making it feel even more modern, open, and light.

2) Larger Kitchen Islands

The Rockstar Kitchen

Large islands (the nearly fill half of the center) are a staple of the post-pandemic kitchen, according to the 2021 NKBA trend report. And we’ve also seen this trend first-hand because over the past three years, MTD Kitchen has produced thousands of large kitchen islands here in Los Angeles. The typical size is 6 feet long. As we’re spending more time in our homes, we need more versatile and functional seating within the kitchen to work, rest, eat and entertain. The large kitchen island is the perfect addition to your new kitchen because it creates storage, seating, a working space and all around comfort. A good designer will know exactly how big the larger luxury island needs to be inside of your kitchen area. Identifying what’s not too big is the part where taste comes in handy.

3) Concealed Kitchens

Concealed kitchens make so much sense. Appliances hidden behind sliding doors, according doors, and cabinet doors. We cleverly discard clutter to achieve a minimal style, you’ll hardly know it’s there, out of sight is one approach we’re taking in our kitchen designs. The cooking space is as invisible as possible, with door panels looking like decorative wall finishings.  In this style, all doors are concealed with push-to-open hinges.

With kitchens, closets, and bathroom cabinets from MTD as an added luxury, we anticipate these homes will rent or sell faster with the kind of quality material and craftsmanship we are providing.

4) More Natural Light

Kitchen Remodel

Homeowners are adding more (or bigger) windows to their kitchens in efforts to bring the outdoors inside — helping a kitchen to feel more upbeat and open. Fact: Sunshine makes any room more inviting and natural elements are instant mood boosters. More Natural Light is a big factor in modern kitchen design. Kitchens are often renovated along side walls being knocked down and large windows that can poor onto the kitchen design are installed instead.

6) Two-tone kitchen designs

Two-tone kitchen cabinets

While Two-tone kitchen cabinets is a new trend, it had become one of the most popular styles due to its simplicity, function, and appeal. An excellent example would be the palette: grey and white, a balance between purity and calmness, which is opposite of a busy kitchen.

7) Marble

Marble

It’s the time of strongly veined quartz or Marble, the busier the better for unmissable luxury and next-level modern style. Since 2020 the marble look for countertops, backsplashes and walls has been a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms, these materials are also highly sustainable; their durability, classic attributes and ability to withstand passing trends makes it a good investment and good choice for kitchens. Marble-looking with naturally strong veining add statement value and create a textural contract between other polished surfaces, gloss and woods.

8) LED Lighting & Statement Lights

Modern Premium Wood Cabinets

Kitchen lighting usually requires three or four approaches: task lights for work areas near the hob, under lighting to highlight shadowy spots and statement lighting to create wow-factor. Thoughtfully placed, cleverly designed and carefully crafted ceiling lights will transform rooms. Lighting will become used as a statement for kitchen designs rather than being left until last. LED lighting is the way of the future and for good reason. While they do have a higher upfront cost, LED lights are more efficient and last far longer than incandescent, fluorescent, or halogen bulbs, and can provide the warm or cool light temperatures your particular space needs. An essential element of any room, the right lighting can take a scheme from dark and dingy to cosy and welcoming with the flick of a switch.

9) Dark & Black Cabinets

Modern Italian Kitchen

We are leaving bright and white kitchen cabinets back in 2020 and replacing them with dark and moody cabinets for 2021. For the darker side, black has been a customer favorite. This look can be achieved with any color of cabinetry that’s on the darker side, such as shades of green, blacks, even blues. If you are looking to make your kitchen appear bold and different, this 2021 trend of dark cabinetry will surely do the job. Keep in mind not all black finishes are created equal, and this could play a big part in the final aesthetic. Depending on the natural light filtering through the room, the surrounding spaces, or even personal preference, you’ll either want to scale your chosen cabinets by their saturation or by their hue to the rest of the room. Pick up a few swatches and hold them up against hardware, fixtures, and appliances to see which is more your style.

10) Smart StorageSmart Storage in the kitchen

In 2020, almost all kitchen renovators made at least some changes to their cabinets. This may not sound like much, but kitchen renovation and kitchen design companies saw more than four times the amount who added cabinets in 2019. As consumers stocked up on extra groceries and household supplies during the pandemic, who wasn’t wishing they had more cabinet space? The demand for Smart Storage increased due to the rise in modern kitchen styles. We recommend using a kitchen island to bridge the gap between functional kitchen space and social dining elements. Do this by ‘dividing’ the island in half in terms of usage and add bar stools to the side. Incorporate purposeful kitchen elements such as integrated fridges. Multifunctional is all-important when it comes to kitchen design, to make the space as efficient as possible adding hidden storage is done smarter by adding new kitchen accessories.  A multifunctional design helps to unify the different uses within the space, while still clearly zoning each purpose.
